Hugues de Riedmatten

Since 2010, Hugues de Riedmatten is an ICREA Professor and group leader in quantum optics at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona. He obtained a Masters in Physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in 1999, and a PhD in experimental quantum optics from the University of Geneva in 2003, for his work on long distance quantum communication in optical fiber (supervisor Prof. Nicolas Gisin). He was then postdoctoral scholar at Caltech (Prof. Jeff Kimble), where he was involved in the first experimental demonstrations of elementary quantum networks using cold atomic ensembles. In 2006, he was appointed as senior researcher at the University of Geneva, where he led the research towards demonstrations of optical quantum memories in a solid state environment. At ICFO, his research includes experimental work on optical quantum memories implemented with cold atoms and solid state systems, quantum interfaces and quantum light sources. He published more than 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals and was awarded a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) in 2011.
