José Trull

Dr. Jose Trull obtained his Bachelor degree in Physics at Universitat de Valencia (1991). After one-year contract in the group of Materials Processing by Laser at the Optics Institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) (1991-1992), obtained a full-time teaching assistant position at the Department Física i Enginyeria Nuclear of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and started experimental research activity in the group recently created at that time by Prof. Ramon Vilaseca, Nonlinear Dynamics, Nonlinear Optics and Lasers (DONLL) (http://donll.upc.edu), his actual research group. Dr. Trull obtained his PhD Title in Physics at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 1999. From 2001 to 2003 he earned a two-year post-doctoral grant from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Education at Universita degli Studi dell’Insubria in Como (Italy) working in the group of Lasers and Ultrashort Pulses of Prof. Paolo Di Trapani. In July 2003 he became Associate Professor at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, and he was promoted to Full professor in August 2023, his actual position. Currently he is, together with Dr. C. Cojocaru, the responsible and coordinator of the Nonlinear Optics and Lasers laboratory of the DONLL group at UPC. His research activity is focused on experimental studies in nonlinear optics and photonics including topics such as the enhancement of nonlinear processes in photonic crystals, harmonic generation under phase-mismatched regimes, diffraction control and filtering in photonic crystals, flat-focusing mirrors, nonlinear interactions in disordered media, characterization techniques of ultra-short optical pulses, dynamics and generation of optical X-waves (optical bullets in media with normal dispersion), semiconductor laser dynamics, phase change optical memories, UV photocatalysis in water treatment or laser induced ultrasound generation for 3D fracture detection. He is co-author of 97 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 6 book chapters and 1 book. His research work has been presented in different congresses with more than 25 invited talks. Co-inventor in one European patent, extended to USA, Canada, China and Portugal, and licenced to Sphere Photonics (Portugal). He has collaborated with different research groups in CNRS (France), Australian National University (Australia), Sofia University (Bulgary), Vilnius University (Lithuania), Universidad de Salamanca, Universidad de Porto (Portugal), US Army Charles M. Bowden Laboratory, Brescia University and others. He has participated in more than 35 financed competitive research projects, being the principal investigator in 9 of them, has been the co-director of 7 PhD Thesis and 2 under actual supervision, and 17 Master thesis and BSc projects. He has been vice-director of the Physics Department in the period 2004-2012 and is involved in teaching activity since 1992 in different Degrees and Master courses at UPC such as General Physics, Photonics, Nonlinear Optics, Ultrafast and Ultraintense Laser Light and Photonics laboratory.
