Seminar announcement (March 23rd): Spectroscopic and Imaging Polarimetry: Basic principles and Examples (Prof. Dr. Enrique Garcia-Caurel)
Mar 17, 2026
On Monday, March 23th, 2026 we organize a seminar in the framework of the Master in Photonics and Europhotonics. Prof. Enrique Garcia-Caurel is spending a week in Barcelona in the framework of the Europhotonics Scholar program.
Title: Spectroscopic and Imaging Polarimetry: Basic principles and Examples (tutorial)
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Enrique Garcia-Caurel, Researcher in Optics and Polarimetry for Materials Science and Biophotonics, École Polytechnique, Paris, France
Date: Monday, March 23th, 2026.
Hour: 11.00 - 13.00h
Place: A4 101 , Campus Nord, UPC
Abstract: This tutorial will review the fundamental concepts of polarization and the main formalisms used to describe how the polarization of light changes when it interacts with an arbitrary material medium. Regarding instrumentation, I will describe the optical properties and applications of basic optical elements used in polarimetry, as well as common optical configurations of partial and complete polarimeters. I will discuss how polarized light interacts with stratified media, such as thin films and gratings, and provide practical application examples. Examples will discuss measurements in different spectral ranges, from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared. Regarding imaging polarimetry, I will discuss fundamental polarimetric properties and how to extract them from experimental samples using simple algebraic methods. Examples will cover various topics, ranging from optical metrology to vegetal imaging.
