We have the pleasure to invite you to the following seminar, organized by prof. Jaume Pujol, in the framework of our Master Program.

Speaker: Nicolas Pohardy (Manager EMEA Vision Experience Center at Johnson & Johnson)
Title: "State of the art of refractive and cataract surgery"

Date: Wednesday, January 3rd
Hour: 11.00 - 13h

ABSTRACT: This presentation will give you an overview of the technology used nowadays in the field of refractive and cataract surgery. In the last 20 years, laser technology (Gas, solid state, fiber) and optical measurement (OCT, Wavefront) have revolutionized the ophthalmologic field. The surgeon practice evolved into a safer and more accurate surgery which provides better patient outcomes. Ophthalmology is in constant needs of innovation supported by a market growth of two digits YOY mainly due to population aging. In the US, it is estimated that more than half of the population needs some form of vision correction (source: United States Census Bureau). The Global Cataract Surgery Devices Market is expected to grow from USD 5,460.48 Million in 2019 to USD 8,206.33 Million by the end of 2025 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.02% (source https://www.reportlinker.com/p05913765/?utm_source=GNW).

Affiliation and biography Nicolas Pohardy is Manager of Service for Southern Europe and EMEA Vision Experience Center at Johnson & Johnson Vision. Johnson & Johnson Vision is a division of J&J specialized in Vision care. J&J Vision products meet the needs of patients who live with vision challenges and look for greater freedom (from the limitations of eyeglasses); ours products include implants, lenses and leading laser vision correction and cataract technologies. I worked first as an optical engineer for R&D and scientific applications and then moved to a more managerial role for almost 15 years in Vision care business. I first joined a US startup company called IntraLase Corp which was the first company to introduce femtosecond technology in refractive surgery. Previous to Medical Devices I worked for Thales Laser (https://www.thalesgroup.com/en/global/activities/market-specific-solutions/lasers).

Thales Laser is a division of Thales, specialized in the design and manufacturing of high energy nanosecond lasers and high intensity, ultra-short Ti:Sapfire femtosecond lasers. I own a Master Degree in Photonic from the University of Barcelona and an MBA from EADA. Technical innovation is a key competitive factor in all the companies I worked with and for. Innovation in photonic and vision care in particular, not only helps Dr to reduce complication and improve patient outcomes but also revolutionized the standard of care. Photonic innovation is present in all steps of vision care; patient selection, diagnostic and treatment (surgery). Photonics is surely one of the fields which bring more innovation to the market so, the future is bright for bright mind in photonic.

Seminars are open and recommended to all students, as part of the academic program of the Master. We strongly recommend you to participate.
